The first written account of Socotra, in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, describes the island as possessing crocodiles, a giant lizard hunted for meat, and a giant tortoise killed for its carapace. Today, no very large land reptiles exist on Socotra, and no fossils have yet been discovered.
